Integrate with Emarsys
Updated over 8 months ago

You can integrate Retention.com's Grow product directly with Emarsys.

An integration between Retention.com and Emarsys does three things:

  1. Automatically sends contacts acquired in your Retention.com account to Emarsys into a list of your choosing (these are your GROW contacts).

  2. Automatically suppresses existing contacts in your Emarsys account.

  3. Ability to set up custom filters to sync filters (ie, send leads from different domains to different lists or ESPs).

  4. Sends Reclaim abandonment events to your ESP (once Reclaim scripts are installed on your website).

You can also use Emarsys with our Reclaim product in order to send product and cart abandonment events to Emarsys to trigger abandonment emails (i.e. Add to Cart emails). See our guide here:
https://retention.com/support/reclaim-add-to-cart-in-emarsys/

What you’ll need

1. Your Username (the Username you sign in with) and Secret Key. To find your Secret Key, go to API and then click Create API user.

2. Copy your Secret and keep it somewhere handy, you'll need it in a minute.

3. Set Permissions under Management > Security Settings > API key.

You will need to set the following permissions:

Suppression:

export.segment

export.status

Get Lists:

contactlist.list

Get Suppression filter:

segment.get

Get All Contacts (without segment)

contact.list

Add Contacts:

contact.create

Reclaim Events:

externalevent.trigger

externalevent.list

externalevent.create

Custom fields:

field.list

field.create

4. You will also need to set up your All Contacts and Recent Contacts Segments for suppression. Go to Segments > Create Segment > Standard Segment > Contact, email behavior, Geo, Smart Insight segment. Name the All Contacts segment and give it a description.

4. Set the Contact criteria and Save.

Email > is not empty

5. Create another new segment (Segments > Create Segment > Standard Segment > Contact, email behavior, Geo, Smart Insight segment) for Recent Contacts, and give it a name and description.

6. Set the Contact criteria and Save.

Date of first registration > Was exactly > 2 > day(s) ago

7. Finally, create the list you want to sync contacts identified from Retention. This is the list that net new contacts (the contacts we identify with our Grow product) will go into. Contacts are sent to this list vai the Emarsys Contact API.

Creating a new list on Emarsys can be found here: https://help.emarsys.com/hc/en-us/articles/115004635409-Contact-lists-Managing-contact-lists

To get started

1. Click on Integrations from the left navigation panel in Retention.com. Then, click Available Integrations at the top, type Emarsys, and choose the Emarsys icon.

2. Activate Grow and/or Reclaim. Paste your Username and Secret Key and click Connect.

3. Click Yes to enable Contact Suppression, and choose either Daily contact suppression or one time suppression.

Daily contact suppression (recommended): This action will load all of your contacts from Emarsys into your Retention.com suppression list and will automatically import new contacts every day into your suppression list. Once you’ve enabled this option, the sync will run daily at 6 p.m. EST.

One time suppression: This action will only run once and load your current Emarsys contacts into your Retention.com suppression list.

Once you enable automatic suppression, Retention.com will sync your regular, opt-in list from your ESP and add it to your Retention.com suppression list. This prevents you from paying for contacts you already have. When you’re finished, click Next.

4. Click Yes to enable Contact Sync, and pick a list from the drop-down menu to sync contacts with. Then, choose whether you want to enable custom sync options.

If you check the box to enable custom sync options, that will display five options: filter by email domain, full or portion of a landing page URL, landing page domain, state*, and referrer URL.

*Note that State data is only available to legacy plans that include address.

This feature allows you to filter your Retention.com contacts before you send them to your ESP. For example, you can send all contacts who hit different landing pages to separate lists. Or, send all of your California leads to one ESP and Texas leads to another.

Email domain: This field auto-fills/populates with email domains (ex. Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL, etc.) from your collected contacts.

Full or portion of a landing page URL: If you’ve put the script on several pages or the entire site, this field allows you to pull out contacts who have only hit Landing Page A or Landing Page B. This option does not auto-populate, so you will have to add in the exact URL.

Landing page domain: If you added script to both Retention.com and Robly.com, for example, the landing page domain would be either Retention.com or Robly.com. This field will auto-populate.

State: This filter allows you to pull out only contacts from one or more states. Note that state data is only available to legacy plans that include address.

Referrer URL: This is the URL the contact comes to your site from.

When you’re finished, click Next.

5. Click Yes to enable your Reclaim event sync.

6. Enable the integration. Once you enable the integration, your suppression and collection sync settings will apply and begin. Then, click Finish.

7. Once the integration is complete, you will see the integration date, API details, sync summary, and more. You can also Remove the integration from this page at the top.

Integration Settings

From your Integration's Settings page, you can access, change, or update any of the following:

  • Your API key

  • Grow or Reclaim Activation

  • Suppression settings

  • Grow Sync settings, including the list or segment you're syncing contacts to

  • Sync summary

  • Reclaim sync

To change the list you’ve synchronized with, click Integrations > Dots > Settings.

Sync summary

You can view your daily sync history under Sync Summary on your integration page. It will show you the date, number of completions, if there are any failures, and the number that are in the queue.

Click on a specific date for details, or, to access all of your sync history, click View Full History under Sync Summary. If there’s a failure, it will show the email address, what type of failure has occurred under ESP Feedback, and the date and time of the failure.

If you have questions about the error message, you can contact support at support[at]retention[dot]com.
