Shopify Installation Update Guide: Shopify Custom App V2

Update your Shopify Custom App to our Shopify V2: the V2 update adds functionality to cover the Shopify Checkout Extensibility update and works in tandem with the existing Custom App.

Updated yesterday

This guide provides a comprehensive step-by-step process for how to setup our Shopify V2 app. The V2 requires the Shopify Custom App to already be added to your store, please reference this article for the Custom App setup if you do not already have it added.

The custom pixel is alternatively known as the V2 Script.

The Shopify Custom App V2 will add functionality to cover the Shopify Checkout Extensibility update and will also allow for our Reclaim Checkout Started scripts to automatically be added. The update will also install the latest version of Retention's Collection, Revenue Tracking, Viewed Product and Add to Cart scripts.

After installation, reach out to your Client Success contact or support@retention.com to activate this feature. If you have any trouble along the way, our support team is here to help.

What you'll need

To ensure a smooth pixel installation, it's crucial that your Shopify store is already integrated with our custom app. The pixel functions will not operate correctly without this integration. For detailed instructions on setting up the custom app, please click here.

Set up integration

Step 1

Log in to your Retention dashboard and select "Code Script" from the left navigation panel. Then, tab over to "View Script".

Step 2

Scroll down to "Shopify Pixel & Customer Events", and then click "Copy Code". You’ll see a green box in the top right-hand corner telling you the code was copied to your clipboard.

Step 3

Go to your Shopify admin dashboard. From the navigation panel on the left, click on "Settings" towards the bottom of the page.

Step 4

Find and click on "Customer events" from the menu. Then click on "Add custom pixel."

Step 5

Name the custom pixel with a descriptive title, such as "Retention.com Script," and then proceed by clicking "Add pixel."

Step 6

Insert the Retention Shopify pixel, which you copied to your clipboard from the Retention dashboard, into the designated code area.

Then, click the "Save" button located at the top right of the page, followed by selecting "Connect."

Step 7

You will be presented with a connection confirmation page. Please click on "Connect" to proceed.

Step 8

Upon successful installation of the pixel, a notification stating "Pixel connected" will briefly appear at the bottom of the page.

Step 9

Please be aware that if your site uses a Shopify Cookie Banner and you've enabled consent for visitors from certain regions, our Pixel will not activate until consent is given.

This can lead to performance issues with our product.

If you wish for our product to function despite having a cookie banner, you can adjust the pixel permissions to "non-required" at your discretion. See the steps below:

  1. In your Shopify settings, go to "Customer events" and then select the "Retention.com" pixel.

  2. Click and expand the "Permission" tab under "Customer Privacy".

  3. Select the "Not required" field and click save.

After installation, reach out to your Client Success contact or support@retention.com to activate this feature. If you have any trouble along the way, our support team is here to help.
